Finger Lakes Wine Festival
goers looking for a hands-on, intimate educational experience flock to the Riedel Experience
. The Riedel Experience is a VIP ticket to the Finger Lakes Wine Festival that offers educational seminars, intimate tasting experiences with Finger Lakes winemakers, and some great take-homes like a complete Riedel wine glass set.
This was the second year the Riedel Experience was offered at the festival. Here is a look at some of the excitement from Saturday's happenings.
The Riedel Experience takes place in the Great Room of the Media Center at Watkins Glen International
(where the Finger Lakes Wine Festival takes place annually). This year there was 120 ticket holders.
Each participant receives the tasting set of Ridel wine glasses. These glasses are varietal specific. The set included an oaked Chardonnay glass, a Riesling glass, a Pinot Noir glass, and a Cabernet glass.
The first tasting session was led by a Riedel representative. This sensory experience demonstrated that the shape of the glass does matter when drinking wine.
The participants of the sessions were completely engaged and enjoyed hearing first hand from these Finger Lakes winery owners.
The last tasting session of the day was lead by Evan Dawon, author of Summer in a Glass.
Evan focused his tastings on Finger Lakes Rieslings.
Evan was kind enough to sign copies of his book after his presentation. Each participant received a signed copy of the book.

Ports and other fortified wines are made by adding grape brandy to increase alcohol content. Most ports are made from red grapes, and are sweet and strong. Typical aromas include fig, dried cherry, caramel, hazelnuts, and chocolate. Here are three ideas for how to pair port wine:
Dark chocolate. Try a piece of dark chocolate broken from a large bar (I recommend 70% cocao or higher for best results). A dark chocolate brownie, chocolate truffle, or flourless chocolate cake are wonderful partners for port, as well. Port is one of the few wines with the body and intensity to stand up to chocolate.
Spiced nuts. Add some whole mixed nuts to a pan on the stove with a little butter and brown spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove). This is a simple and healthy dessert that will bring the spiciness and nuttiness of the port to life.
Make a sauce. Port makes a beautiful reduction sauce when simmered and concentrated on the stove. You can pour the thick and syrupy sauce over meat for a main course, or over fruit, ice cream, or cheese for dessert. When you add the wine directly to the dish, you are assured of a great pairing.
Many delicious ports can be found in the Finger Lakes region. Seek out Fox Run
, Goose Watch
(which make a rare white port), Hazlitt
, and Red Newt
